Native American Living History at Rappahannock Station
Where: Remington, VA
When: 10am - 3pm
Join us at this spectacular Fauquier County 250th Anniversary Event to honor the
contributions made by Native Americans to the settling of Virginia and Fauquier
County.
Native American interpreters from the Mattaponi Reservation at West
Point, Va will be
on-site for the day to make history come alive for the visiting
public. The Mattaponi
tribe is an indigenous Powhatan tribe. During its greatest
days, the Powhatan
Confederacy consisted of approximately 34 tribes
representing more than 10,000
people under the leadership of Chief Powhatan
(Pocahontas’ father). The Confederacy’s
territory once spanned the entire coastal
plain of Virginia.
Shirley “Little Dove” Custalow-McGowan will be one of the interpreters on-site for
the day. Shirley “Little Dove” is a descendent of the Great Chief Powhatan and
Pocahontas. She has been interviewed (to name only a few) by The Washington
Post,
Japanese television, the International Herald Tribune, the New York Times,
the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the Daily Press, Tidewater Review, CNN,
Entertainment
Tonight, PBS, and many others. There will be an example of a
Native American village,
demonstrations of village life, tools, crafts, and you will
be able to ask questions about
the Native Americans’ important contributions to
the settling of Virginia.
In 2007, the United States marked the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, VA the
first
permanent English settlement in America. The Mattaponi tribe and Shirley
“Little
Dove” participated in the many historical celebrations that occurred in
2007 at
Jamestown. The significant role that native people played in the lives
of the earliest
English colonists in Virginia – symbolized by the appeal of
Pocahontas to her father the
Great Chief Powhatan to spare the life of Captain
John Smith only a few months after the
English first arrived – should still be
appreciated by Americans today. Come out and
speak with descendents of
Pocahontas, and learn the amazing history for yourself.
Return to the
17th Century and see how the Powhatan Indian people lived and survived.
Through historical interpretation, lectures, and demonstrations; see, hear, and
experience a Powhatan village as it was when the first English colonists arrived.
The
program captures the history and culture of eastern Woodland Indians by
describing
how the Powhatan Indians lived at the time of European settlement.
Powhatan Indians
in traditional dress will use artifacts to show the skills their
ancestors used to work
with the natural environment. A longhouse will also
be on-site to enhance the
educational experience.
Driving Directions: From Warrenton, take U.S. Hwy. 15/29 South. Pass
through
the intersection with Rt. 17 at Opal and through the intersection with
Rt. 28, continuing
south on U.S. Route 15/29. Approximately two (2) miles
south of the Rt. 28 intersection,
turn left onto Business Route 15/29 toward
Remington, VA. Pass over the bridge over
the Rappahannock River, and
